How It Works

Each state has its own formula. California uses vehicle value × age multiplier. Virginia and Connecticut use property tax. Most other states use flat fees or weight tiers.

Formula: Annual reg = base fee + (weight or value multiplier) + local surcharges + EV/hybrid fees.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Select your state.
  2. Enter vehicle make, model, year and value (where applicable).
  3. Calculator returns annual registration plus any first-year title fees.

Worked Example

Example: 2024 Honda Civic, $25k value, California. First-year DMV fees ≈ $475 ($233 VLF + $86 reg + title and CHP). Year 5 drops to ~$280 as VLF declines.

Reference Table

Most EVs and PHEVs now pay an extra $50–$225/year surcharge in 30+ states. Diesel surcharges apply in some western states.

State Typical annual reg (mid-size sedan)
California $280–$475 (declines with age)
Texas $80
Florida $78 (heavier vehicles $103+)
New York $26–$140 by weight
Virginia $40 + ~$2.00/$100 of value (property tax)
Oregon $112 (electrics + $115/yr surcharge)
Massachusetts $60 + ~$25/$1 000 of value
Colorado $75–$300 by value and age

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are EV registration fees higher?

States levy them to recover lost gas tax revenue. Critics argue they overcharge — the average ICE driver pays $90–$150/year in gas tax, but many EV surcharges are $200+.

Can I deduct registration on taxes?

Only the value-based portion — and only if you itemize. The flat-fee portion isn’t deductible.
