Fuel Economy Converter

MPG ⇄ L/100km ⇄ km/L

L/100km
MPG (US)
MPG (UK)
km/L

How It Works

All units are derived from L/100km as the common base. The calculator converts your input to L/100km, then derives all other units using standard conversion factors.

L/100km ↔ MPG US: 235.214 / MPG | L/100km ↔ MPG UK: 282.481 / MPG | L/100km ↔ km/L: 100 ÷ L/100km

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter your current fuel economy figure.
  2. Select the unit it is in from the dropdown.
  3. Click Convert to see all other units.
  4. Read the equivalent MPG, L/100km, and km/L values.
  5. Use the results to compare across regions (US, Europe, UK).

Worked Example

Example: 30 MPG (US) → L/100km = 235.214 ÷ 30 = 7.84 L/100km → km/L = 100 ÷ 7.84 = 12.76 km/L → MPG UK = 282.481 ÷ 7.84 = 36.03 MPG UK.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between US and UK MPG?

UK (Imperial) gallons are larger — 1 UK gallon = 1.2009 US gallons. So 40 MPG UK equals about 33.3 MPG US. Always confirm which system is being quoted, especially when comparing UK and American car specs.

Why is L/100km inversely related to MPG?

L/100km measures how much fuel you use per distance (lower is better), while MPG measures how far you go on a unit of fuel (higher is better). Mathematically they are reciprocals after unit conversion.

How do I compare a European car spec with a US EPA rating?

European WLTP figures are often stated in L/100km. Convert using L/100km = 235.214 ÷ MPG US. Note that WLTP and EPA test cycles differ, so real-world results may vary from either.

What is a good fuel economy for a family car in 2025?

A good benchmark is under 7.0 L/100km (over 33.6 MPG US) for a petrol family sedan. Hybrids commonly achieve 4.5–5.5 L/100km. Full EVs are often rated below 2.0 Le/100km on equivalent consumption.
