The use of steels in current vehicles is essential due to its availability, low cost and high strength. Steel has one of the highest strengths of all metals, and allows for different levels of fl exibility depending on how it is processed.
It is possible to produce vehicles without steel. However, using other materials to achieve the same strengths increases cost. Aluminum, magnesium, titanium and carbon fiber are all materials that can be used to make a vehicle. Some of these materials are actually used in Volkswagen vehicles, but the primary material for the body components is steel.
This SSP will cover the steels used in Volkswagen vehicles, where they are used and general repair information.
There are variations in the types and colors of steels used in the graphics. Please refer to the legend for each model . Do not assume that a particular color indicates the same strength steel for all vehicles.
