Introduction

The Peugeot 406 Saloon was introduced into the UK in early 1996. At its launch, the 406 was offered with a choice of 1.6 (1580 cc – not available in the UK), 1.8 (1761 cc) and 2.0 litre (1998 cc) petrol engines ora 1.9 litre (1905 cc) turbo diesel engine.

The engines fitted to the 406 range are all versions of the well-proven units which have appeared in many Peugeot/Citroen vehicles over the years. The petrol engines are from the XU engine series, and are of four-cylinder overhead camshaft design; the 1.6 litre engine is a SOHC 8-valve unit and the 1.8 and 2.0 litre engines are DOHC 16-valve units. The diesel engine is from the XUD engine series, and is a SOHC 8-valve unit.

The engine is mounted transversely at the front of vehicle, with the transmission mounted on its left-hand end. All engines are fitted with a manual transmission as standard (an automatic transmission option was introduced at a later date on some engines).

All models have fully-independent front and rear suspension arrangements incorporating shock absorbers and coil springs.

A wide range of standard and optional equipment is available within the range to suit most tastes, including central locking, electric windows and an electric sunroof. An air conditioning system was available as an option on certain models.

In the summer of 1996, a 2.1 litre (2088 cc) turbo diesel engine was introduced into the range (a 2.0 litre petrol turbo model was also introduced, but is not covered by this manual). The new engine is a 12-valve version of the XUD engine which has also been used in other Peugeot/Citroen vehicles.

In early 1997, Peugeot introduced an Estate model, and also introduced the V6 petrol engine (not covered by this manual) into the range. Apart from this, only minor detail changes have been made to
the vehicle.

Provided that regular servicing is carried out in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations, the vehicle should prove reliable and very economical. The engine compartment Is well-designed, and most of the items requiring frequent attention are easily accessible.

Your Peugeot 406 manual

The aim of this manual is to help you get the best value from your vehicle. It can do so in several ways. It can help you decide what work must be done (even should you choose to get it done by a garage). It will also provide information on routine maintenance and servicing, and give a logical course of action and diagnosis when random faults occur.

However, it is hoped that you will use the manual by tackling the work yourself. On simpler jobs it may even be quicker than booking the car into a garage and going thoro twice, to leave and collect It. Perhaps most important, a lot of money can be saved by avoiding the costs a garage must charge to cover its labour and overheads.

The manual has drawings and descriptions to show the function of the various components so that their layout can be understood. Tasks are described and photographed in a clear step-by-step sequence.
