Introduction to the Opel Ascona and Manta

The new ‘B’ series Opel Ascona and Manta models introduced in 1975 have a completely new bodystyle, providing improved passenger accommodation with increased glass area and a lower ‘waistline’.

Mechanically the new Ascona and Manta are similar to the previous ‘A’ series models, which were extremely reliable, therefore only minor modifications have been necessary.

The models covered by this manual comprise the two and four-door saloons, two-door Coupe and Hatchback fitted with a 1.6, 1.8, 1.9 and 2.0 litre engine. The 1.6 litre engine was initially available in a low compression form, with a smaller carburettor and could thus run on two-star fuel. This option has now been discontinued for the UK market.

All models are fitted with servo-assisted disc brakes on the front wheels and drum brakes at the rear. For safety, the system is dual-line with a special anti-locking valve fitted in the hydraulic line to the rear brakes.

Front suspension is of independent coil and wishbones type, while the live rear axle is located by radius arms and a panhard rod and is supported on coil springs and telescopic shock-absorbers. Anti-roll bars are fitted at the front and rear.

Steering is by a forward mounted rack and pinion gear and the steering column is the collapsible mesh, energy absorbing type.

All models are available with four or five-speed all-synchromesh manual gearbox or a three-speed automatic transmission with manual override and kick-down facility.

The Rallye E and 2.0 GTE models are fitted with Bosch fuel injection.
