How to Read Acura Fault Codes Without a Scanner (DIY Guide)

OBD-I Models (1995 and older):
- Under the dashboard (driver’s side).
- Look for a 2-pin blue connector labeled “Service Check Connector” (SCC).
OBD-II Models (1996+):
- Use a standard OBD-II scanner. This method applies only to pre-1996 Acuras.

Turn the ignition to ON (do NOT start the engine).
Bridge the SCC pins:
- Use a paperclip/jumper wire to connect the two pins in the blue connector.
- Note: Avoid touching other pins to prevent fuse blowouts.

The CEL will flash a series of long and short blinks:
- Long blinks = First digit (tens place).
- Short blinks = Second digit (units place).
Example:
- Code 12: 1 long blink + 2 short blinks.
- Code 5: 5 short blinks (no tens place).

No codes? The CEL will stay off if no errors are detected.
Multiple codes: Codes cycle in order of detection (e.g., 12 → 5 → 23).
Fuse Safety: Avoid bridging incorrect pins to prevent blowing fuse #46 (15A) under the hood.

While DIY code reading helps identify issues, complex problems (e.g., code 41 for catalytic converter efficiency) require professional diagnostics.
